Situated just south of the equator. Tanzania sits within the African Great Lakes region in East Africa. The official name is the United Republic of Tanzania with the national capital as Dodoma though its not the largest city. Dar es salaam is the former city and largest port of Tanzania. Tanzania covers an area of 947, 303km² (365,756sqmi) and the largest country in East Africa. Most of the mainland lies 600ft (200m).
